Lindisfarne originally took its name from Lindisferne House, a property built in the 1820s near the suburb of Rosny. At one time the suburb was known as Beltana from 1892, but, because of confusion with Bellerive, it was renamed Lindisfarne in 1903 after Lindisfarne, a tidal Island (Holy Island) in Northumberland, England. The easternmost part of the middle of the suburb, where the Beltana Bowls Club and the Beltana Hotel are located, is still locally known as Beltana.
Lindisfarne is centred around a bay of the same name that is one of many such sheltered anchorages on the Derwent River. The bay is home to a number of clubs that cater for rowing, sailing and motor-cruising the local waterways.
The Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania in Lindisfarne Bay, The Lindisfarne Sailing Club and the Lindisfarne Rowing Club are all situated on the bay's foreshore.
Lindisfarne is one of Hobart's most popular places to stay, being located by The Derwent River and only 5 minutes to the likes of Salamanca Place, The Botanical gardens and beautiful Bellerive Beach. Just 10 minutes away you will find yourself in North Hobart, the home of fine dining and a large number of quality restaurants to choose from. Fifteen minutes away will bring you to a golf course, 7 mile Beach, some sensational wineries and horse racing at Elwick. Twenty minutes away is historic Richmond, 25 minutes away is the Cadbury Factory, just 30 minutes to Mount Nelson with spectacular views over Hobart and district, 45 minutes to Mount Wellingtonone, one hour to Port Arthur and only 2 hours to the Tahune Rainforest Airwalk. So much to see and do and so close!
